What was SHIFTboston?
SHIFTboston was a young professional group established in 2009 in the Boston Society of Architects. It was created to engage young professionals in interdisciplinary design challenges to promote new ideas. We hosted 6 distinct design forums to create a place for cross-industry professionals to gather, connect, and inspire one another while generating new, interdisciplinary ideas for architecture and urban design.
Our design challenges went beyond imagination -- and Boston -- and reached designers and students around the world. Our competitions Why Not, Moon Capital, Float, Why Stop, and Glow have brought together the most fascinating minds in and beyond our industry. We worked with the AIA, AIAA, ICA, the gaming industry, and affiliates of NASA while hosting a fleet of the most outstanding thinkers of our time, including architects Thom Mayne, Hillary Sample, Amanda Levete, and Stefan Behnisch; educational leaders Michelle Addington, Sarah Whiting, and Kathryn Dean; renowned space engineers Kris Kennedy and Brent Sherwood; and urban innovators Michael Sorkin and Mitch Joachim.
SHIFTboston may be quiet now, but we remain committed to the ideas of those who are pushing our profession forward and expanding our thinking beyond the urban realm! Unfortunately, our website was hacked, so we are in the process of rebuilding an online archive.
